FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – SEPTEMBER 26, 2018 – Principal photography begins September 27th in London on THE SONG OF NAMES.  The film is directed by Francois Girard (The Red Violin, Oscar winner for best music). Oscar Nominees Tim Roth (The Hateful Eight) and Clive Owen (Children of Men) will star along with Catherine McCormack (Braveheart), Jonah Hauer King (Little Women) and Gerran Howell (Genius).  Producers are Robert Lantos (Eastern Promises), Lyse Lafontaine (Mommy) and Nick Hirschkorn (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell).   Co-producer is Viktoria Petranyi (Jupiter’s Moon).  Executive producers include Mark Musselman (Barney’s Version), Peter Touche (Blinded by the Light) and Stephen Spence (The Sea).

THE SONG OF NAMES is based on distinguished classical music scholar Norman Lebrecht’s novel, winner of the Whitbread Award.  The screenplay is by Oscar Nominee Jeffrey Caine (The Constant Gardener), original music score is by Oscar Winner Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings).

THE SONG OF NAMES will be filmed on location in London, Budapest, Treblinka, Montreal and New York.

Oscar Nominees Tim Roth (plays Martin) and Clive Owen (plays Dovidl) star in this emotional detective story spread over two continents and half a century. Beneath the film’s stunning and emotional musical revelation burn the horror of a war and the lost souls extinguished from history.

A bold journey through friendship, betrayal and reconciliation culminating in the titular Song of Names, the film shows that within the darkest of mysteries sometimes only music has the power to illuminate the truth, heal and redeem.

Director Francois Girard said “Friendship, brotherhood, betrayal and redemption over two continents and five decades. This is the remarkable cinematic journey of THE SONG OF NAMES which brings us back to the darkest page of the Twentieth Century’s history.”  He continued, “Walking the grounds of the Treblinka Memorial, I found my true motivation for this project. I am committed to making my small contribution to the fight against historical amnesia.”

Producer Robert Lantos commented, “THE SONG OF NAMES is a story that must be told.  In an original and emotionally compelling way, through a musical composition, the film drives home two of the most important words in my vocabulary: Never Forget.”

Producer Lyse Lafontaine remarked, “I was moved by the story about two young boys from different worlds, going through a war and its atrocities together, losing and then finding each other years later with their friendship still intact. It is about the darkest and the most luminous aspects of humanity. It is about legacy, memory, and the power of music that transcends all life.”

Producer Nick Hirschkorn said, “I have been obsessed with telling the story of The Song of Names ever since I read Norman Lebrecht’s remarkable debut novel 15 years ago. To be finally bringing it to the screen with such a talented team of collaborators, all bound by a shared passion for this epic and timeless tale, feels like a dream come true.”

Co-Producer Viktoria Petranyi commented, “It is a real honor for me to work with such talented people on this special and great script. I really hope we can contribute to their exciting vision and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this journey. For me the film is about true friendship and talent so I’m here to support both of these values.”

Gabrielle Stewart, Managing Director of Hanway Films stated, “We are thrilled to be working with this incredibly talented team to bring to life one of the most powerful and cinematic screenplays we have read in a long time. With Howard Shore on board to galvanize the potent music element of the film, we can look forward to a huge cinematic experience.”
