May 24, 2001, Toronto – Serendipity Point Films and Alliance Atlantis today announced that Ararat, written and directed by Atom Egoyan (Felicia’s Journey, The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica), began principal photography May 21, 2001 and will film on location in Toronto and Calgary. Produced by Robert Lantos (Sunshine, The Sweet Hereafter, Black Robe) and Atom Egoyan, the film features a star-studded ensemble cast including the legendary Charles Aznavour (Shoot the Piano Player), Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio, Gossip, Deconstructing Harry), Brent Carver (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow), Marie-Josée Croze (Maelström), Bruce Greenwood (Thirteen Days, The Sweet Hereafter), Arsinée Khanjian (Foolish Heart, Felicia’s Journey), Elias Koteas (The Thin Red Line, Crash), Christopher Plummer (The Insider) and newcomer David Alpay.

Set against the production of an epic film about the Armenian Genocide of 1915, Ararat is a contemporary story that weaves between history in the making and the effects of history on modern culture. With his recognized style of shifting seamlessly through time, Atom Egoyan explores the quest for personal, sexual and cultural identity through the intimate moments shared by lovers, strangers and families.

Additional production credits include Co-Producer Sandra Cunningham (Saint Jude, Possible Worlds), and Associate Producers Julia Rosenberg (Sunshine, Claire’s Hat) and Simone Urdl (Jack & Jill, Soul Cages). Egoyan has again assembled a talented group of key creative department heads including Director of Photography Paul Sarossy, Production Designer Phillip Barker, Costume Designer Beth Pasternak, and Editor Susan Shipton.

Alliance Atlantis owns worldwide rights and will handle international sales as well as distributing directly in Canada. Alliance Atlantis’ Momentum Pictures will distribute in the UK, ARP has secured distribution rights for France, Belgium and Switzerland, and Serendipity will act as sales agent in the U.S.
