DUSTIN HOFFMAN JOINS PAUL GIAMATTI IN BARNEY’S VERSION
Robert Lantos announced today that Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner Dustin Hoffman will join Academy Award Nominated and Golden Globe Winner Paul Giamatti in Barney’s Version to be directed by Richard J. Lewis. The screenplay is adapted by Michael Konyves from Mordecai Richler’s novel. Principal photography starts in Rome on August 17th.
Dustin Hoffman will play the role of Izzy, Barney’s father – a foul-mouthed, retired cop. Mr. Hoffman is a two-time Academy Award winner and seven-time Academy Award Nominee. His breakout performance in The Graduate caught the world by storm. His storied career is full of the most memorable characters on film. He won Academy Awards for his performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man. He also received Academy Award nominations for The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Lenny, Tootsie and Wag The Dog. His numerous credits include Little Big Man, Straw Dogs, Papillon, All The President’s Men, Marathon Man, Straight Time, Billy Bathgate, Sleepers, and Alfredo Alfredo. Mr. Hoffman most recently starred in Last Chance Harvey in which he received a Golden Globe nomination. Additionally, he starred in the Academy Award nonimated feature, Kung Fu Panda for which he won an Annie Award for “Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production”. Mr Hoffman’s other recent film credits include Stranger Than Fiction and Meet The Fockers.
“I saw The Graduate when I was in University. It was a seminal event in my life. This amazing actor’s extraordinary performance convinced me that everything, even the impossible, was possible,” commented producer, Robert Lantos. “Ever since and through all of Dustin Hoffman’s remarkable work, I have fantasized about making a film together some day,” he added.
“Many of the films that Dustin Hoffman starred in led me to become a filmmaker in the first place. Now I have the opportunity to work with a legend,” said director Richard J. Lewis.
Director Richard J. Lewis co-wrote and directed Whale Music (produced by Robert Lantos), starring Maury Chaykin in a Genie Award winning performance. For the past nine years, Mr. Lewis worked on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, where he was an executive producer, writer and the director of 50 episodes.
Producer Robert Lantos’ credits include the Golden Globe Winner and Academy Award Nominated Eastern Promises, the Golden Globe Winner and Academy Award Nominated Being Julia, Golden Globe Nominated Sunshine, Cannes Grand Prix Winner and Academy Award Nominated The Sweet Hereafter, Berlin Silver Bear Winner eXistenz, Cannes Special Jury Prize Winner Crash, Best Picture Genie Winners Ararat and Black Robe. Mr. Lantos most recent credit is the Cannes Award Winner Adoration currently in theatres.
Co-producer Domenico Procacci’s credits include Cannes Grand Prix Winner, David di Donatello Award Winner and European Film Award Winner Gomorra (“Gomorrah”), David Di Donatello Award Winner Caos Calmo , Cannes Semaine de la Critique Winner Respiro, Sundance Audience Award Winner and David di Donatello Award Winner L’Ultimo Bacio and Genie Award Winner Silk.
Co-producer Lyse Lafontaine’s credits include Leolo, selected for Official Competition in Cannes and Winner of the Gold Shell for Best Film at San Sebastian Film Festival, Les portes tournantes, Maman est chez le coiffeur , and Un dimanche a Kigali. Co-producer Ari Lantos’ credits include the Slamdance Festival Opener Real Time starring Jay Baruchel and soon to be released You Might As Well Live starring Michael Madsen.
Executive Producer Mark Musselman has worked with Robert Lantos for 10 years. His executive producing credits include the Toronto International Film Festival opener Fugitive Pieces, Cannes Competition entry Where The Truth Lies and National Board of Review Award Winner The Statement.
Barney’s Version is produced by Serendipity Point Films in association with Rome’s Fandango and Montreal based Lyla Films. Investors include: Astral Media, Corus Entertainment, Telefilm Canada, SODEC, HGF, OMDC and CBC. E1 Entertainment will distribute in Canada. Serendipity Point Films will announce an international sales agent at a later date.
